* * *

The lightly thrumming pumps of the water tower hummed in the darkness. Ramin Kain crouched next to the second-floor window overlooking the northeast approach to the apartment building.

Earlier, he’d shrunk backward, when two fully armed praetorians had mounted the stairs spiraling around the water tower. They hadn’t noticed him, his presence masked by the background noise of the nearby pumps, and the heavy-duty construction of the tower’s walls. He’d sighed with relief as they passed him by, moving to the top of the tower.

He adjusted the fit of his Order night glasses and stared at the northeast approach. He checked his gear as he waited, his sword was ready, and his Glock 9mm was loaded with silver bullets. He didn’t expect to use his weapons. No one knew where he was. Even Cornelius Crane would only know that he was able to view the site, but would not know precisely where he was. If he had to use his weapons, it would only be to save his life and would mean that his mission had almost certainly failed. He checked his smartphone and ensured that it was on full silent mode. He returned it to his chest pocket. He’d used it fifteen minutes before to send an image of the Mirovar force team van to the praetorians, using the quantum address provided by Cornelius Crane.

A thin edge of fear hovered in the background. Ramin took a slow deep breath and wished for the arrival of the Mirovar force team. He stared through the window, there was a glimmer of street lamp light reflecting off painted metal.

It’s the van, they’re here, he thought excitedly.

A dark-gray van paused at the mouth of the lane way as if teasing him. All it needed to do, was roll forward about a hundred yards, and it would pass directly in front of the water tower. A perfect position to be attacked from above. If not taken there, the van would loop around an abandoned parking lot, and past the main entrance of the apartment block.

Please come down this side, he begged whatever gods might listen.

With his breath passing through gritted teeth; Ramin waited in nervous anticipation for the murder of Francis Mirovar and Anton Slayne to begin.
